Topps produced another quality set in 1975, although centering is a bit of an issue. The cards
are definitely colorful, featuring a multi-colored border that is split with the top half or so of the border
being one color, and the bottom half being another color. The backs show career statitics, personal info and
a trivia question with a small cartoon image. Another unique feature introduced by Topps in 1975
was a full parallel mini set. The mini cards are indentical to the full size cards except for size, but
are a little tougher to find and thus command a slight price premium. There are 660 cards in the 1975 Topps set.
There are four hall of famers whose rookie
cards are found in the '75 set, including George Brett, Robin Yount, Jim Rice and Gary Carter.
The Brett and Yount cards are the keys to this set, and both players had remarkably similar careers.
Both played for small market teams and stayed with their original team for their entire career -- something
you never see these days.. Both are the career leaders for their respective teams in
singles, doubles, triples and home runs (Stan Musial is the only other player to do that). Both players
retired the same year and were inducted into the hall of fame the same year. These four rookie cards, as
well as #500 Nolan Ryan and to a lesser extent #70 Mike Schmidt, #320 Pete Rose and #660 Hank Aaron are
considered to be the key cards of the set as well as important cards for collectors who focus on the cards
from the 70's.
